Mitcham Hills Churches

Community ministry

We are excited that as a gathered community of churches here in the Adelaide Hills (Blackwood region) we can serve our community effectively through our schools ministries. Throughout 2008 many of us from various churches worked tirelessly to shape a new initiative that was a broader community focus and support.

On March 4th 2009 we finally opened the doors to our latest community response ministry – Beacon. Beacon is an emergency relief facility designed to provide assistance to members of the community that are struggling to make ends meet. We have a number of trained volunteers available to assist people who walk in off the street or co-ordinate appointments with people. Our volunteers are able to sit with people to help evaluate their needs. We have an onsite pantry which is well stocked and access to financial assistance through various voucher systems set up with business that are will to make these available.

We thank some of our local businesses for assisting us in our ministry to the community.

Flight Centre Blackwood donate 1% of sales from every customer who books with them and mentions Beacon

Curves Blackwood collect and donate non-perishable food items for our pantry

Foodland Blackwood are covering the production costs of electrinic vouchers that we can put credits on

Thankyou so much to our local business in partnering with us.

Our local churches and CPS workers from the local schools now refer people to Beacon for assistance so please spread the word. We are affiliated with and supported by the Salvation Army, Churches of Christ Careworks, Luthern Care, Uniting Care, Baptist Community Care and St. Vincient’s De Paul.

Beacon is currently located at the Blackwood Church of Christ office. The emergency relief service is currently open on Wednesdays from 10am – 2pm. We will expand opening hours as we are able to recruit volunteers.
